Juice jam: The Hit Match 3 Puzzle game

Juice Jam is an adorable and fun Match-3 style game for iOS, Android, and Facebook. It features fun characters, imaginative saga maps, and a new Town Square feature where you can build and decorate your own corner of the fantasy world.

I lead the UI/UX and visual design on all major features and events from late 2017 - late 2018.

Tools used:

  • Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects (visual design and animation)

  • Sketch (UX flows and layouts)

  • Protopie (interactive prototyping)

  • Zeplin (handoff to remote engineering team)

Character and environmental art was created by the Jam City art team.

Town Square Feature

Goals

Juice Jam contains a wide variety of saga map areas for players to travel while they play through the level progression. Fans of the game have become very passionate about the characters and playful environments. Our goal was to give players a way to interact with these aspects of the game in a whole new way.

Town Square was designed to:

  • allow players to decorate and theme their own in-game map

  • be approachable and easy to use for all player types

  • delight players with a new way to interact with the game

  • give players incentive to interact with in-game characters

UX and Visual Design

It was very important to make sure that the potentially complex feature did not alienate casual players and confuse them during gameplay. My approach was to ease players into the feature with thoughtful tutorials while keeping accessibility and discoverability high. I worked very closely with Game Design and the Art Director to ensure that players found the feature fun and delightful.

My additional creative contributions to the project:

  • Designed the overall Town Square map layout

  • Partnered closely with Art and Engineering to create the parallax scrolling effects and tile theme image assets efficiently

  • Built several art templates for the Character Cards, Decoration Items, etc

  • Animated several in-game UI flourishes to help improve the overall experience

  • Created several UI prototypes for external usability testing and internal review

JUICE JAM PLAYER Events

Juice Jam holds frequent events to help engage players. Events range from item collection goals to team vs team rewards. I worked very closely with the Juice Jam art team to create unique custom event screens.
